Solidarity with People of Sudan and Particularly its Scientific Community

Dear members of the Sudanese Academy of Science,

We members of NAPRECA would like to express our solidarity with members of the SNAS and the Sudanese people during this trying and difficult time in the history of your beloved nation. We did this officially during the 20th International Symposium of the Natural Products Chemistry Network for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA) Symposium in Harare, Zimbabwe, September 18 – 20, 2023.

The symposium was attended physically by one of the founding members of NAPRECA, Prof. Sami Khalid. Despite the challenges they are facing, a number of Sudanese Scientists and students gave their scientific presentation virtually. This is a testament to the tenacity and strength of the people of Sudan.

I, Solomon Derese, former program officer of NAPRECA, led the expression of solidarity with a small presentation attached. During this very emotional session of the symposium everyone was moved and expressed their willingness to stand with you and provide their unwavering support in any way they can.

It will forever remain etched in our mind the hospitality and heartfelt welcome we enjoyed in 2013 when your country hosted the 15th Symposium (book of abstract attached). We do not not have any iota of hesitation that Sudan will come out strong out of this difficult situation and we will all once gaing enjoy the hospitality of your beautiful people and country.

In attendance during the symposium among others were Prof. Robert Byamukama, Makerere University, Uganga (the outgoing Executive Secretary of NAPRECA) and Prof. Sameh AbouZid (the current Executive Secretary of NAPRECA), Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, Egypt.

Attached please find some photos and a presentation on our expression of solidarity which is extracted from your message to the scientific community on the 19th of September 20223 and the symposium that was held in your nation.

Sudan will rise again like never before!

Best wishes

Dr. Solomon Derese
