On behalf of the Sudanese National Academy of Sciences (SNAS), I am honored to extend our deepest congratulations and immense pride in the election of Professor Mohamed Hag Ali Hassan, the President of SNAS, as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).

This prestigious recognition by the Royal Society—one of the world’s most respected scientific institutions—is a testament to Professor Hassan’s lifelong commitment to scientific excellence and global leadership. As stated in their letter, the Royal Society regards the election of Fellows as its most important activity, ensuring the Society’s enduring reputation for scientific distinction over the past 360 years.

Professor Mohamed Hag Ali Hassan is currently President of the Sudanese National Academy of Sciences (SNAS) and a Member of the Board of Trustees of Grand Challengers Canada (GCC). He was Chairman of the Governing Council of the United Nations Technology Bank, Turkey; Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for International Development (ZEF), Germany; President of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP); founding Executive Director and President of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS); President of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS); founding President of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC); Chairman of the Council of the United Nations University (UNU); and Chairman of the Honorary Presidential Advisory Council for Science and Technology, Nigeria. He served as vice-chair of the scientific group for the UN Food Systems Summit.

After obtaining his DPhil in Mathematics from the University of Oxford, he returned to Sudan as Lecturer at the University of Khartoum, and later became Professor and Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Among his honours: Commander, Grand Cross, and National Order of Scientific Merit, Brazil; and Officer, Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He is a recipient of the G77 Leadership Award and the Abdus Salam Medal for Science and Technology.

He is a member of several merit-based academies of science, including, TWAS; the African Academy of Sciences; the Islamic World Academy of Sciences; Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales; Académie Royale des Sciences, Belgium; Pakistan Academy of Sciences; Academy of Sciences of Lebanon; Cuban Academy of Sciences; academy of Sciences of South Africa; the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society.

The scientific research encapsulated herein spans across theoretical plasma physics as well as environmental, geoscience, and space science fields. Professor Hassan has a long list of publications in Theoretical Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy, Wind Erosion, Dust and Sand Transport in Dry Lands. He also published several articles on food systems science and STI in the Developing World.
