The Georgetown African Studies Program and affiliated centers hosted an event discussing the impact of the ongoing war in Sudan on higher education and academic research. The event, supported by the MESA Global Academy and the African Studies Association, featured a report by Muna Elgadal and Rebecca Glade titled “Research in Displacement: The Impact of War on Sudan’s Higher Education and Academic Research Community”. The report examines the catastrophic effects of the April 2023 conflict on Sudanese institutions, highlighting the challenges faced by displaced academics and students striving to rebuild their lives. Rebecca Glade, a PhD holder in African history from Columbia University, is a Visiting Researcher at Makerere University, focusing on Sudanese political movements and student activism. Elobaid A. Elobaid, Senior Advisor with the UN OHCHR, has extensive experience in human rights law, governance, and legal reform in Muslim Africa, holding advanced degrees from McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan. Both speakers provided valuable insights into the broader implications of war on academia and human rights in Sudan.
