A. Introduction

Sudanese National Academy of Sciences (SNAS) is an Autonomous, independent, Nongovernmental, Nonpolitical and merit-based Organization founded in August 2005 by a distinguished group of Scientists from Sudan.

The Academy is first and foremast, an honorific society whose membership is drawn from the most distinguished Sudanese Scientists working and living in Sudan and abroad. Currently the Academy has over 80 Members and this number is expected to increase substantially within the coming few years.

A Council, elected by Academy Members every three years at the General Assembly meeting, provides oversight and guidance for the Academy's activities. An Executive Committee consisting of the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary General and the Treasurer is responsible for the supervision of the Secretariat and the implementation of the programs

 

B. Vision and Mission

Vision

SNAS aspires to be the apex merit-based Organization in Sudan, dedicated to promoting excellence in Research and Education in STI and their applications to sustainable development in the Country.

Mission

As a merit-based National Academy of Sciences, the mission of SNAS is to mobilize the most accomplished Sudanese Scientists at home and in the diaspora to provide collective intellectual leadership for the betterment of Sudan

C. Strategic Objectives

The overall strategic objective of SNAS is to promote scientific excellence in the country for the benefit of the Sudanese Society.

The specific strategic objectives are:
- To recognize, support and promote the pursuit of excellence in scientific research and science education in Sudan.

- To provide independent, authoritative and evidence-based advice to decision makers on science-based issues of critical importance to sustainable development in the Country and Region.

- To promote collaboration and exchanges between leading Scientists in Sudan and their peers abroad, especially Sudanese Scientists in the diaspora.

- To develop partnerships with other merit-based Academies in the world for the purpose of initiating joint projects and exchanging information and best practices

- To initiate and implement projects on major challenges facing the Country.

- To support and mentor Young Scientists and foster the next generation of Scientific leadership in the Country.
- To promote efforts to improve quality education and increase public understanding of Science in the Country

D. Strategic Programs

Within the time frame of its first strategic plan, SNAS plans to consolidate its previous achievements and substantially expand its portfolio of activities and add new dimensions to respond to new challenges and opportunities

The following key activities will be designed and implemented to fulfill the strategic objectives outlined in section C above:

Strategic Program 1: Honoring Excellence in Science

A major strategic priority of SNAS is to recognize, support and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scientific research in Sudan. It will therefore continue to give top priority to electing outstanding scientists as members. In addition, it will for the first-time award prizes and medals to eminent Sudanese scientists who have made significant contributions to scientific research and its application in the Country.


Membership

- Election to SNAS membership is the most important recognition given by the Academy to Sudanese scientists. The election follows merit-based criteria and evaluation procedures.

- Within the period of this Strategic Plan SNAS plans to substantially increase its membership base by identifying eminent Sudanese Scientists at home and abroad, who are not yet members of the Academy, and nominating them for election as new members.

- Particular effort will be made to search for and elect accomplished women scientists in the country to improve the gender balance in the membership

 
Prizes and Medals

- SNAS will introduce for the first time an annual award to honor individual scientists, working and living in Sudan, who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and its application to solve critical problems in the country.

- SNAS will also discuss with the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the African Union (AU) the institution of a TWAS-AU annual prizes for young scientists in Sudan

- SNAS will also award for the first time Medals to eminent personalities who have served the cause of scientific research and quality education in Sudan and made outstanding contributions to their development

 Strategic Program 2: Contributing to the Implementation of SDGs

- A key strategic objective of SNAS is to play a central role in finding the best scientific solutions to critical sustainability problems affecting the lives of people in the country.

- Particular attention will be given to the role of science in implementing the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including, in particular, addressing issues related to poverty and the adverse effects of climate change

- During the Strategic plan period the Academy will Convene a number of interdisciplinary workshops and study groups of high-level experts, drawn from the Academy membership and elsewhere, on such issues as renewable energies, safe drinking water, food security, climate change adaptation, environmental pollution, communicable and non-communicable diseases and other public health issues.

- The recommendations arising from these workshops and study groups will form the basis for developing policy-relevant consensus reports and/or statements to be communicated to decision makers in government and private sector.


Strategic Program 3: Promoting quality Science Education and Scientific Literacy

- SNAS will expand its activities in science education, scientific literacy
and the public understanding of science in the coming years.

- The plan is to initiate a number of workshops in different regions of the country to train the trainers in " inquiry-based science education (IBSE) ", following the successful regional workshops held in Khartoum in 2014 and 2017.

- The Academy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will endeavor to introduce IBSE in a number of Schools as a pilot project.

- The Academy will extend collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as well as relevant Research Universities to carry out an independent consensus study on the state of quality education and research in the Country.

- The Academy also plans to encourage and facilitate the delivery of public lectures by its members and others on science-based issues of concern to society.

- The Academy also plans to improve its website and expand its publications and media connections to increase its visibility in the local and international press and present its activities to the general public.


Strategic Program 4: Supporting Young Scientists

- SNAS plans to strengthen its ties with the Sudan Academy of Young Scientists (SAYS), which it helped to establish in 2007 as the voice of young scientists in Sudan.

- Together with SAYS the Academy will mobilize and empower young scientists in the country to help tackle developmental challenges through science and innovation.

 - SNAS in collaboration with SAYS will organize national annual conferences involving young scientists, young entrepreneurs and influential young leaders in business and industry. The aim is to share experiences and identify common developmental challenges where young scientists can play a transformative role through research and innovation.


Strategic Program 5: Supporting Women Scientists

- SNAS, in collaboration with the Sudanese Women in Science Organization (SWSO), will assist in increasing the participation of women scientists in research, teaching and leadership.

- Particular attention will be paid to fostering the retention of leading womenScientists in top-level decision-making positions in Academia, Government and Industry, and to raise awareness among decision makers on the gender dimension to development and the significance of addressing the gender gap in Science, Technology and Innovation.


Strategic Program 6: Fostering Partnerships with Other Organizations

- At the national level, SNAS will work closely with Universities and relevant Ministries, especially the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, to implement the activities outlined above.

- At the regional and global levels, the Academy will seek to initiate joint projects with sister Academies in Africa and around the world under the auspices of NASAC and IAP

 

 

Strategic Program 7: Securing Financial Resources

- To fulfill its Strategic Objectives, SNAS must develop and implement a dynamic fundraising strategy and explore funding opportunities at home and abroad.

- Funds will be required to cover the operational costs of the SNAS Secretariat and implement the programs outlined above.

- In pursuance of its fundraising campaign, SNAS will first appeal to organizations and institutions in the Country, especially the private sector and universities.

- SNAS will also extend its appeal to international organizations and foundations abroad to support its global agenda.
