Prof. Marcel Tanner, Emeritus Director, Swiss Public Health Institute, and the new President of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences (SCNAT) January 2016, visited Khartoum invited by SNAS during the period 19th – 21st, January 2016.
Prof. Tanner visited the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Science & Technology ( Tagana) in Omdurman, hosted by Prof. Sami A. Khalid and delivered a public talk entitled:
“Challenges & new approaches to research & development of new medicines against neglected tropical diseases”
on the 1st day of the visit which was well attended by staff and students.
On the 2nd day, Prof. Tanner visited the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC), Soba, hosted by Prof. Ahmed Fahal. Later during the day, the visitor met with Minister of Higher Education & Research briefly and delivered a public talk at the Ministry main hall entitled:
“North South collaboration for better community oriented scientific research’’.
On the 3rd day Prof. Tanner visited the Institute of Endemic Diseases, hosted by Prof. Ahmed M. Musa. Later in the day he visited SNAS and Sudan Medical Heritage Foundation (Prof. Alsafi), met with some of the members and president of SNAS.
Prof. Tanner signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) after the meeting as follows;
- MoU between the Sudanese National Academy of Sciences (SNAS), Prof. Mohamed H.A. Hassan (SNAS President) and the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences (SCNAT) (Prof. Tanner, President)
- MoU between the University of Science & Technology (Prof. Sami Khalid) and the Swiss Public Health Institute (SPHI) (Prof. Tanner).
- Prof. Alsafi gave Tanner a concept note of two national projects i.e. Bibliography of Sudanese Health research & the Sudan Health Museum.
